Warding off the insinuating whispers of Satan
Q30: What
supplications should be recited to ward off the insinuating whispers of Satan
?
A:
One can appeal to Allah by whatever supplication that Allah may help him to say. For example, one can say: O Allah! I seek refuge in You from Satan. O Allah! Protect me from Satan. O Allah! keep me safe from Satan. O Allah! Help me to remember You, to thank You, and to perfect my worship of You. O Allah! Protect me from the traps of Satan, Your enemy. One should also increase his Dhikr (Remembrance of Allah) and recitation of the Qur’an. Whenever one is invaded by these whisperings, one should seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan, even while offering Salah (prayer). If in the act of offering Salah this occurs, one should spit dryly to his left side three times and seek refuge in Allah from Satan three times.
It is authentically narrated that:
‘Uthman ibn Abul-‘Aas Ath-Thaqafi
(may Allah be pleased with him) complained to the Prophet (peace be upon him) about the insinuating thoughts that distracted him during Salah, so he ordered him to spit dryly to his left three times and seek refuge in Allah from Satan while engaged in prayer. He did so and Allah rid him of them.
Hence, whenever a believer suffers from such insinuations, he should earnestly beseech Allah for safety and constantly seek refuge in Him from Satan. In addition, one should strive to resist Satan and not obey him whether during Salah or anything else. Whenever one performs Wudu’ (ablution), one should make certain it is performed well and then not repeat it. The same advice should be followed in Salah and Takbir. By doing so, one opposes and combats Allah’s enemy i.e., Satan.

This is how a believer should be; an enemy to Satan, striving against him and never submitting to him. Whenever Satan casts doubt into your heart concerning Wudu’ and Salah, though you are certain you have performed both, do not give in and repeat either of them. Rather, seek refuge in Allah from Satan.
A believer should be strong in his struggle against Satan, so that he can never defeat or harm him. Because once Satan overpowers a person, he drives him to the brink of madness and plays with him as he pleases. Believers, male and female, must beware of Satan and seek refuge in Allah from his machinations and evils. Accordingly, they must remain firm and not succumb to his insinuations to repeat Salah, Wudu’, Takbir or anything else.
If Satan causes you to doubt whether your garment or a stain that has fallen on it is impure; should he cast doubt in your mind that there is something impure in the bathroom, on the ground, or even in your place of prayer, spurn him and seek refuge with Allah from his evils. Stand for prayer in that same place or on the same rug, and do not succumb to his whispers by doubting the purity of the ground; unless you actually see some wet impure substance that you have stepped on. In this case, you should only wash your feet. And all praise to Allah!
Never give in to the insinuating whispers of Allah’s enemy i.e. Satan, and know that purity is the original state of things.
That is the origin, so do not yield to Satan in anything; you should act based on what you see with your own eyes and are certain of. This will ensure that Allah’s enemy will not overcome you. May Allah keep us all safe and secure!
